The token was found 6-13-17 in Mount Vernon IL with my Minelab CTX3030 6 inches down. The front reads: Medal, The Excelsior Shoe For Boys, July 1910. The reverse reads: Good Luck, Manufactured by the Excelsior Shoe Co, Portsmouth O(hio). Excelsior Shoe Company designed shoes for the Boy Scouts (which was formed in the US the same year) and used the tokens as advertising. Prior to Nazi Germany, swastikas were a good luck symbol.”

Found by John W. : “I found these items in a small front yard using my Ace 400. Most of the items were 4 to 6 inches deep. The items included pennies from 1918 to 1957, a 1939 mercury dime and a 1963 dog tax tag.”

MYSTERY HUNT: Ed H. : I got 1/2 a horse shoe, some nails, bits of iron and some aluminum and a tiny button. The button was in the hole I was digging, and a find is a find.

MYSTERY HUNT: Jim H. : Thought this thing was a 4″ shovel head, maybe for ashes, since at first the surface was completely smooth, gray-brown, and showed no markings whatsoever. Decided to soak it and get any crud off. Look what appeared! Don’t know what it is. Has designs made from swastikas. [Swastikas have been used for thousands of years. From the late 1800s to the 1920s, they gained popularity as good luck symbols. The stylized four-leaf design in the center behind the swastika designates a four-leaf clover. That would date this to between 1870s-1920s.–ed.] Maybe a grave marker? It has a flange near the handle, which is why it looked like a shovel.

MYSTERY HUNT: Tom R. : Thought this was trash until I cleaned it up, but I still don’t know what it is. Great hunt, weather was very nice. A lot of laughs. Also 3 cents, brass gutter hanger, scissors, nails, large washer and trash.

MYSTERY HUNT: Mike I. :  4 pennies, 4 dimes, 5 quarters, a buckle, a button, a bean back cufflink, [Bean-back cufflinks were primarily used from 1910 to late 1930s. From the stylized design, which looks to be a type called “Streamline Moderne”, this cufflink could possibly be dated around the mid-1930s–ed.] and a small ring, kid-size. Had fun today with everyone today.  Looking forward to the next time.

It reads on one side “property of vender” and on the other side ” loaned for amusement only”. Plus a one dollar token from the Palace Station, Las Vegas. Found it two inches down.”

Brass weight for a scale, spent 40 cal. hollow point bullet, a small brass buckle, outer plate, a copper letter “D” that was found in the bushes, and the gun which turned out to be a pellet gun.”

Found by Matt H.: “Found this 1902 Barber Quarter 2/14/17 in a local park.  It was 3 inches down and found  with my Minelab CTX 3030.  It unfortunately has scratches on the obverse and reverse that was not caused by me.“

Found by John W.: I recently found all these Hot Wheels in 2 hours of hunting using an Ace 400 detector. The cars were from 2-10 inches deep. I found the toy soldier and plastic landscape scene because it was next to a Hot Wheels.

Found by Matt G.:  A small four leaf clover charm found at one inch deep. The back says “SARAH COV.”  Which is a costume  jewelry company that was founded in 1949 and closed in 1984.

Found by Pat R.: November find and December surprise! WWII US Military Sterling Silver Cross Lapel Pin. I found the sterling pin on the right in November, and had trouble identifying what it was. My December surprise was to pick a replica of it during our club holiday party! Now I need to go back to the spot where I found it with my AT Pro, and see if I can locate any of the accomplishment tags.

Found by Susannah: A further mini hunt. Silver-plated child’s ring, a copper alloy locket with a rose on front. It opens, but there were no pictures. The back is inscribed “Love Forever”. Plus $1.41 in clad.

Found by Mike Steimel: “I got out for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon to an old yard in my south county neighborhood and got my first shield nickel, plus a couple of other nice things. Added today’s 1892-O Barber dime, too!” AT Pro with Nel Storm coil for all of these finds. Good old Missouri soil with fairly shallow coins for their age.

Also found by Matt Huntman: “Spent some more time in the fields today and found a 1838 Seated Liberty Half Dime!  (Modern dime size to right). This is the oldest US coin I’ve found.  Cross another one off the list! I was using my Minelab Ctx3030 and this was about 6 inches down.”

Found by Matt Huntman: “I’m still in total shock today.  I spent a few hours yesterday metal detecting a farm field (home site in mid to late 1800s) in Red Bud IL and rescued 2 coins that I’ve never found before.  The first coin I dug today was a 1800 Spanish 8 Reale.  This is my first foreign silver coin, my first Spanish Reale, and my oldest coin.  The second coin I found was a 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent.  I was using my Minelab Ctx3030. The Reale was 6 inches deep,  the large cent 2 inches deep. This is a field I’ve hit many times and have not found coins. This is by far my best day of detecting.  I may never top the Reale!”

A lady’s draped bust, facing left, with tiara/crown and a bun at the nape of her neck. Back has an iron bloom where the hinge was to the (missing) back piece. Found with my Deus at about 4 inches.”
